Indigenous Dementia Research Roadmap

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Roadmap for Dementia

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Roadmap for Dementia Research and Translation offers a cultural framework to guide national dementia research policy, funding, and practice.

Co-developed through extensive consultation with 253 participants across 26 urban, regional, and remote communities, the Indigenous Dementia Research Roadmap outlines five strategic priorities:

Priority A: Health literacy

Priority B: Prevention, risk reduction and diagnosis

Priority C: Access to services and supports

Priority D: Culturally informed services and workforce

Priority E: End of life care

The Roadmap is guided by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander values—including strengths-based, healing-centred approaches; data sovereignty; community-driven leadership; and respect for Indigenous knowledge systems and aims to improve dementia outcomes in those communities through meaningful, empowering research and collaboration.

Community Consultation report

The Community Consultation Report outlines the collaborative journey to shape the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Strategic Roadmap for Dementia Research and Translation.

It began with a Round Table Meeting in June 2018, which brought together researchers, clinicians, service providers, and community representatives to discuss dementia’s impact on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and to identify research priorities and translation strategies

From this consultation four key priorities emerged:

  1. Building collaboration among dementia research teams

  2. Strengthening the dementia research workforce within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities

  3. Engaging effectively and respectfully with communities, ensuring cultural control

  4. Focusing on high-priority research areas driven by community needs

The report established guiding research principles, emphasizing community-driven priorities, strengths-based and healing-centered approaches, capacity building for Indigenous researchers and communities, respectful partnerships, recognition of Indigenous knowledge systems, data sovereignty, and research that is both realistic and responsive to community needs

Action Plan

This Action Plan outlines actions against each of the five priorities in the Roadmap, to be undertaken by the dementia research sector.
