This research project is the first to address the needs of carers of older people with cognitive impairment and disabilities in remote Kimberley Aboriginal communities.

The project found a significant decrease in carer’s depression scores when they participated in regular support meetings. Education session also improved wellbeing for unpaid carers.

‘I got respect … understanding how to be a better caregiver … gave me knowledge’.

Engaging with carer advocacy groups led to ongoing groups in the Kimberley. This may have contributed to a framework for culturally responsive carers programs. This research project demonstrated that a participatory action research program for carers of older Aboriginal Australians is feasible and can improve carer mental wellbeing.
